Fortuity

Time and again, the harder I try to control my circumstances, the less life seems to cooperate. I’m often reminded that this uncomfortable disparity between forcing a desired outcome and the inevitability of a situation is worth acknowledging, and doing so brings a measure of relief. I can fight tirelessly against life’s uncertainties, or I can make room for chance to surprise me.

The same instinct shapes my practice. This project invites chance to co-author the work. Someone else drove, and I photographed from the passenger window, holding the frame open as the world went by. I chose neither the speed, the route, nor the composition — and chance brought a beauty I could not have planned.

I hope these photographs encourage the viewer to consider their own relationship with chance, and that a quarrel with chaos might become something closer to a harmonious duet, in creative practice and in life alike.
